2nd Alonissos Traditional Dance Festival 8th - 10th July 2016

The 2nd Alonissos Dance Festival took place between Friday 8th and Sunday 10th July on the harbour front in Patitiri.  Unfortunately, although Dave had trained with the dance group from early May he was unable to dance with the group due to Gerry's ongoing treatment.  We arrived back on Alonissos on Thursday evening from Athens via Agios Konstantinos at 8.15pm, just as the groups were being ferried across the harbour.

The Alonissos dance group were joined by 18 groups spread through Greece from Crete in southern to Alexandria in Northern Greece.  Like last year the central area of the harbour was completely blocked to traffic so that the area around the stage could be filled with chairs and the tavernas filled the bottom of the road with tables and chairs for the large crowd.

Thursday evening was the opening night of the festival and the groups assembled before 8pm towards the end of the port.  The groups boarded boats and were taken across the harbour, then processed one at a time along the road to assemble opposite the Alonissos Cafe.  After an introduction the groups formed into circles and performed traditional Syrtos dances and then continued, in a massive snake formation, onto the stage to dance and then off the opposite side.  Over each of the 3 days the groups went onto the stage and performed their set of traditional Greek dances.

The Alonissos dance group performed 4 dances in traditional costume:

Σούστα Αμοργού
Σούστα Λέρου
ΣυρτοΜπάλλος, Μικρά Ασία
Μπαλαριστός, Μυκόνου

The organisation by the Dimos was again absolutely brilliant and everything went seamlessly throughout the evening.  We watched an open rehearsal by the Friday night dance groups outside Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village where Yorgos and Ekaterina made cheese pies outside the taverna and Maria and Anastasia cooked them.  Three other ladies cut and served the pies over a 2 hour period.  Dave went down to the final night on Sunday and the whole event was rounded off by a brilliant display of dancing from the Pontian group from Alexandria and a wonderful firework display on the end of the harbour.  We look forward to next year and the 3rd Alonissos Dance Festival.

Below are the festival invitation and banners along with some still shots taken before and during the first night of the festival.
