3rd Alonissos Traditional Dance Festival 8th - 10th July 2017

The 3rd Alonissos Dance Festival took place on Saturday 8th, Sunday 9th and Monday 10th July on the harbour front in Patitiri.  The Alonissos dance group were joined by 23 groups from as far away as Crete, Northern Greece and Cyprus and almost all places in between.  Follow this link to view the programme and the groups involved in the festival.

Posters and banners were put up around the harbour front as you can see here.  As with previous festivals the central area of the harbour was completely blocked to traffic so the area around the stage could be filled with chairs and also so the tavernas could fill the bottom of the road with tables and chairs for the large crowd.

On Saturday evening the groups assembled at 7pm towards the end of the port where the Zenith Volou freighter normally berths.  The groups were taken by boat across the harbour, then processed one at a time to live music along the road.  Here is a montage of some of the groups arriving off the boats to the harbour front.  All the groups started a Syrtos dance individually and then joined together in a massive Syrtos dance all around the stage and harbour area.  The members of the groups who were holding banners or pennants all went onto the stage and were dancing together.

The Alonissos Dance Group went on stage first and in turn the other 7 groups on the first night went onto the stage and performed their set of traditional Greek dances.

The Alonissos dance group performed 3 dances in traditional costume:

Συρτός Κυκλάδων
Συρτός Μπάλος, Τζιάς
Σαν της Ωριάς το Κάστρο, Χίου

It was a hot evening and the dances were quite complex but, other than a few minor hiccups, the performance was very well received.  After the performance Dave sat in the Alonissos Cafe for a drink and then came home because due to Gerry's medical problems she had to stay at home with our dear friend Jan and watch the proceedings on the live webcast.

The organisation by the Dimos was again brilliant, given the number of groups, and everything went seamlessly throughout the evening.  We unfortunatley couldn't get to the 2 other nights but we watched the Sunday and Monday dancing live on the webcast.  We look forward to next year and the 4th Alonissos Dance Festival.

Below are some still shots taken before and during the event by Dave and other friends who were there at the first night of the festival.
