Alonissos Multi-Terrain Marathon 2007

The Alonissos Marathon was held on Saturday 6th June and consisted of 10km, 20km and 42km running and walking events.  Unfortunately, the previous two years we haven't been on Alonissos during the first week of June so missed both the inaugural and second marathon events.  The weather on the morning was hot and most of the on-lookers were standing in the shade to get protection from the morning sun.  There was a pasta party at the Koutouki taverna for contestants the previous night but all entrants looked fighting fit and probably benefited from the intake of carbs.  Maurice, the son of our friends Beau and Bert arrived on Alonissos late Friday night and got up early Saturday morning to take part in the race.  In the foreground is Maurice in black strip in relaxed mode before the start.  Just before 9am a short speech was made in Greek and a starting gun fired and off they went, runners at the front and walkers at the back, along the harbour front and round the corner by the Alkyon Hotel on a course that took them up the main road passed Votsi.

After the last entrants had cleared the harbour we went off for a bite of breakast and just as we were finishing our bacon omelettes two children went out to the finish area with a white tape.  At about 9.45am the first runner back broke the tape.  This is the runner just after finishing.  Shortly after that another runner came through and it soon became a procession of runners arriving back at the finish line.  At this point we headed off back home and came back to the harbour front at 8pm for the awards ceremony.

A table was set up on the harbour front covered in cups and the cups and prize money was handed out over a period of about 2 hours.  This is a picture of our next door neighbours Malcolm and Viv who walked the entire marathon course in 8½ hours.  Maurice came 4th in the marathon in 3h 36mins and got a certificate of honour.  Half way through the proceedings a one minute silence was held in memory of seven walkers who had lost thier lives the previous week when they were washed away by a flash flood down a dry river bed they were walking along.  After the awards ceremony it was published that traditional dancing would take place but for some reason this never happened.
