Breaking News or "The News When it Happens as it Happens"

December 2015

  • Thursday 31st:
Loads of people out shopping yesterday especially in Stephanos' veg shop, opposite the school, which had a fantastic array of fresh fruit and veg including rhubarb.  The most rammed place however was the bank where it was standing room only, with people waiting to pay their car and other taxes before the end of the year.
Dismal day yesterday with a strong and cold northerly wind blowing all day but the rain forecast was nothing more than intermittent drizzle that died away early afternoon.  This morning the strong and cold wind is still blowing and we have seen nothing yet of the snow forecast, although that's probably famous last words!!  The wind is forecast to die down tomorrow, which will also be very cold, but the change to southerly winds on Saturday and Sunday should herald the return of the warm weather.
  • Wednesday 30th:
The good weather started to break yesterday afternoon when the wind picked up and the clouds rolled in.  Overnight we had some showers and the wind picked up even more.  This morning is grey and overcast with a strong chilly wind blowing but currently dry, although probably not for long.
  • Tuesday 29th:
Another lovely day yesterday with plenty of sunshine and a very warm evening.  This morning is warm, sunny and hazy with little or no cloud and a light breeze blowing.  This spell of good weather is due to continue until tomorrow when we are forecast a week of cloud, rain and sleet.

We had another very quiet day yesterday.  Although Dave is feeling a lot better, Gerry is still poorly but slowly on the mend.
We have added the music and video of the dance Hasapia Ebros (Χασαπια Εβροσ) to the Greek Dance Music N - Ω and Greek Dance Videos N - Ω pages respectively.
Another very pleasant day yesterday and this morning is sunny with clear skies and the air is cool and damp after a heavy overnight dew.  The forecast is still showing that a slug of bad weather will hit Alonissos from Wednesday into the New Year.

Merry Christmas to all the visitors to our website and readers of Breaking News.  Wherever you are in the world have a wonderful day.
There are 10 of us getting together for Christmas lunch in Netty's house from 1pm today and yesterday Gerry peeled and cut more than 5 dozen brussel sprouts for the meal today plus some reserved for Gerry's 'bubble and squeak' tomorrow!!  There has been a great response to Panos and Marina's offer to open the Black Cat in Patitiri for Christmas lunch and we spoke to Sarah who said there are 17 people there together for the meal.
Glorious day yesterday with temperatures in the sun in the low 20's C (high 60's F).  There was a very heavy dew overnight and Christmas morning is warm with sunshine and cloud and a light breeze.
  • FYI:  Although Yorgos is away in Thessaloniki during the festive season Taverna Panselinos will be open at weekends; 24th - 27th, 31st - 3rd Jan and 7th - 10th Jan.  Open for drinks from 4pm and food available from 7pm.
  • Thursday 24th:
Jan and Netty delivered a very entertaining Christmas quiz for the Fun(d) Raising Group at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village last night.  The quiz was very well supported and there was a brilliant atmosphere and the 170 euro raised was donated to the fund set up to provide aid for refugees coming on to the island.  Mike and Trish Perry won the 100 euro 'Not the 100 Club' December draw.  The 4th Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village is on Wednesday 27th January from 7pm onwards, hosted by Julia Browne.
Last shopping day before Christmas and then the shops will be closed tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday.
Another lovely day yesterday with the wind dying away during the afternoon and this morning has started like yesterday, very warm with clear skies but with only a light breeze blowing.  The weather still looks really grotty for the start of the New Year.
  • Wednesday 23rd:
Christmas Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz and the 'Not the 100 Club' draw take place this evening at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village from 7pm to 9pm, hosted by Jan and Netty.  Everyone welcome.
According to OpenSeas the ANES Lines ferry Proteus will be doubling its schedule in the New year with additional departures from Alonissos to Volos on Thursday's and Friday's, in addition to the normal departures on Sunday's and Wednesday's.
The good weather continued unabated yesterday and, after a heavy overnight dew, this morning is warm and sunny with blue skies but with a stiff northerly breeze blowing.  However, according to Windfinder, we are in for high winds, rain and sleet at the end of the month.
  • Tuesday 22nd:
Don't forget the Christmas Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz and the 'Not the 100 Club' draw tomorrow evening at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village from 7pm to 9pm, hosted by Jan and Netty.  Everyone welcome.
Work on the car parking area in the Old Village, behind the cemetary, is moving on and they have now started to lay the hard surface.
Another lovely day yesterday with plenty of sunshine and a very warm evening.  This morning is warm, sunny and hazy with little or no cloud and a light breeze blowing.  This spell of good weather is due to continue until the end of the month but, at the moment, looks to be changing on New Year's Eve.
  • Monday 21st:  This coming week we have the following events:

Dave went to the dance practice yesterday in the school gym and 7 people had a lively and interesting dance class with Yorgos.  Dance classes will restart in the New Year.
The Alonissos Cafe in Patitiri has closed for the winter but the Corali bar is still open and beautifully decorated for Christmas.
Today is the 'Winter Solstice' and the shortest day and longest night of the year.  This also means that from tomorrow we are heading towards summer on Alonissos.

Kαλη Eβδομαδα (have a good week) from Dave and Gerry.

There is a dance practice today at 6pm in the school gym.
We went up to the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village yesterday and unexpected for us Mary, aided and abeted by Chef Demi, was cooking battered fish and chips which were excellent.  Let's hope this becomes a regular attraction.
Dave went to the dance practice with Yorgos yesterday in the school gym and there was a group of 5 people, due mainly to the other events on last night.  Yorgos taught a varied group of dances, all of which he had danced with us in Taverna Panselinos over the past 3 years, including 2 dances from Pondos.
Cloudy but warm day yesterday with the light breeze and this morning is quite warm with some cloud.
  • The News About Gerry:  Is not what we would have hoped for.  According to Gerry's oncologist Flora the disease has shown "some progression", so, as of last Wednesday Gerry is back on chemotherapy every 4 weeks.  Gerry is still very strong and determined to come through this but the cancer appears to be as stubborn as she is!!  The good news is that we get to have Christmas and New Year at home with our family and friends.
  • Saturday 19th:
There will be Greek dance practices in the school gym at 6pm today and tomorrow.
We had a fantastic evening at the GITs 'A Fireside Event' at Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village last night.  The event was very well attended and there was a wide range of different entertainment in the form of recitations, poetry, songs and a sketch.  We are so pleased we managed to get back in time as the whole evening was wonderful and we hope it will continue in the future.
We arrrived back yesterday to a chilly but generally pleasant evening and this morning is cool with blue skies and some cloud around.
  • Wednesday 9th:
Our dear friend and dance teacher Yorgos has managed to book Gerry a full blood test with cancer markers and a CT scan booked in EuroMedica in Athens on Friday morning, so we are off on the early Flying Cat tomorrow.  The results of the blood test will not be available until next Monday afternoon and then we will have a meeting with Gerry's oncologist Flora next Tuesday morning and hopefully can then get the bus to Volos and be back on the afternoon Flying Cat next Wednesday.  So, another disruption to the everyday story of Alonissos folk but hopefully this will be the last visit to Athens before the New Year and that we can have a peaceful Christmas on the gem of the Aegean.
The good weather continued unabated yesterday and this morning is cloudy and overcast but warm with a cool breeze blowing.
  • Tuesday 8th:
First 'Rhythmic - Pilates - Stretching - Relaxation' class with Bente Keller at the Kick Boxing School in Votsi from 10 - 11.30am.  Bring your own mattress.
An evening of the poetry of Nikos Kannadias 'At the edge of the Ocean' at the Cafe Bookshop in the Old Village from 7.30pm.  The evening will be presented in both Greek and English with a background to the poet Nikos Kannadias and readings of his poetry and hopefully one or two songs with guitar that have been made from his poems.  The bar will be open for drinks.
Work on the car parking area in the Old Village, behind the cemetary, is getting close to completion.  It appears that all the concrete walls are in place and recently only a bulldozer and road roller have been working there to flatten the ground.
Another lovely day yesterday with plenty of sunshine and a very warm evening.  This morning is warm, sunny and hazy with little or no cloud and a light breeze blowing.
  • FYI:  Panos and Marina have said that they will open the Black Cat in Patitiri on Christmas Day for lunch this year.  A number of people have said they would like to have a joint 'do' and everyone is welcome to come along and join in.  Panos needs an idea of numbers, so if you are interested can you let Sarah or Philippa know, preferably by the end of this week (ie Friday 11th).
  • Monday 7th:  This coming week we have the following events:

Dave went to the dance practice yesterday in the school gym with Yorgos and 6 people had a lively and interesting dance class.  He started the class off on the 8 base steps for Kotsari from Pondos which is one of the most difficult dances we have come across.  The rest of the dance will be developed over the coming classes.
Work to lay the new water pipe has finished and the trench has now had a hard coating put over it and levelled to make the road easier to drive on.
Yesterday was sunshine and cloud with a pleasantly warm evening and this morning is sunny with cloud and we have a light breeze blowing.
Kαλη Eβδομαδα (have a good week) from Dave and Gerry.
  • Sunday 6th:
There is a Greek dance practice today at 6pm in the school gym with Yorgos.
Today is the name day of Saint Nicholas and the bells were ringing at 7.40am to call people to the service at the church of his name in the Old Village.
Due to other events last night there were only 10 people for the dance class with Yorgos but we had a very enjoyable hour of Greek dancing with a nice mix of dances.
The initiative to ban plastic bags on Alonissos is being observed in most shops where possible and 'bags for life' are available to buy in some shops.  The change of culture to bring your own bag is still sinking in and it is not uncommon to see people at a supermarket check-out with an arm full of goods.
A mix of cloud and sunshine during the day yesterday with a cool and clear evening and little breeze.  This morning is very still and warm with overcast skies.
  • FYI:  Bente Keller will be starting her 'Rhythmic - Pilates - Stretching - Relaxation' classes at the Kick Boxing School in Votsi next week.  The first class is Tuesday 8th from 10 - 11.30am, then Friday 10 - 11.30am and Sunday 4 - 5.30pm.  Classes are 25 euro per month and you should bring your own mattress.  For more information contact Bente on 697 462 1734.
  • Saturday 5th:
There will be Greek dance practices in the school gym at 6pm today and tomorrow.
We had a frustrating and unproductive trip to Athens and Gerry knows no more about the current state of her health than before we left!!  The upshot of the meeting with Gerry's oncologist Flora is that we have to go back to Athens next week for another CT scan and an up-to-date blood test before any decision can be made on what course of treatment, if any, needs to be done or whether Gerry goes on maintenance.
We arrrived back yesterday to an overcast but generally pleasant evening and this morning is overcast with a light breeze blowing and cool sea mists.
  • Tuesday 1st:
We are off on the ferry to Mantoudi on Evia tomorrow and then on by bus to Athens for Gerry to have a consultation with her oncologist.  If all goes well we hope to be back on the Friday Flying Cat from Volos, so this will be the last update on the website until Saturday morning.
Today the ban on plastic bags in supermarkets and shops starts on Alonissos.
The windy died away during the day yesterday but there was still plenty of sunshine.  This morning has started sunny with thin high level cloud but the weather forecast still looks good for the whole of next week and next weekend.

Another lovely day yesterday but this morning is cool and overcast with light drizzle and a strong breeze blowing.
  • Thursday 26th:
We delivered the 2nd Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village last night and the money raised will be donated to a fund set up to provide aid for refugees coming on to the island.  At the last minute Chester, Nigel and Nik decided to play after the quiz and those remaining had a great time dancing the night away.  The 3rd Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village is the Christmas Quiz, hosted by Jan and Netty, on Wednesday 23rd December from 7pm onwards.

Taverna Tzitzifia in Patitiri closed for the winter yesterday, probably due to the impending dreadful weather currently forecast to start during Sunday night with torrential rain and severe gale force winds.
The morning cloud yesterday cleared and we had a lovely day with plenty of sunshine and a very warm evening.  This morning is cloudy and warm with a light breeze blowing.
  • Monday 23rd:  This coming week we have the following events:

Kαλη Eβδομαδα (have a good week) from Dave and Gerry.
  • Sunday 22nd:
There is a dance practice today at 6pm in the school gym.

We had a fantastic night of entertainment yesterday when GITs presented a murder mystery play 'Surgical Spirit' at Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village.  The taverna was packed solid with a very appreciative audience.  The play was brilliantly scripted by Julia Browne and superbly acted by the members of GITs in the production.  We should also not forget the other people involved in the lighting, music, props and prompting, etc.  We look forward to the next production with bated breath.

Another lovely day yesterday, when the cloud cleared, with blue skies and sunshine and a beautiful Aegean sunset.  This morning is beautifully warm again with blue skies and sunshine and virtually no breeze.
  • Tuesday 17th:
The morning cloud cleared and we had a lovely day yesterday with plenty of sunshine and a very warm evening.  The weather this morning is similar to the last few days being lovely and warm.
  • Refugees:  Apparently another group of poor souls were brought to the island on Saturday; 180 people of whom 57 were children.  They were found on Skantzoura thanks to the Skyros Port Police.  They have now left Alonissos but for the next ones there is a priority for blankets and shoes.  If you have any of these to donate please contact Angela at the KEP office and she will let you know where and when to deliver them.

Gerry came through yesterday unscathed and is happy because there is only one Friday 13th next year, which is in May.
Lovely day yesterday with sunshine and a very light breeze but this morning we have woken to a heavy overnight dew and cloudy skies with a light breeze.
  • Diary Date:  In the spring there was a meeting with the Dimos (Council) to discuss what is happening on the island and to raise any issues of concern.  It was agreed that it would be useful to have a meeting twice a year.  There will be a meeting at 10am on Thursday, 19th November, at the Dimarxeio offices in Patitiri.  Please attend if you can as the Dimos is keen to involve non-Greeks living on the island in the community.
  • Friday 13th:
Today is NOT a good day for Gerry as she is superstitious and Friday 13th or 'Black Friday', in the Christian faith, is considered to be a very unlucky day.  No one really knows the origin of the 'fear of Friday 13th' or 'Paraskevidekatriaphobia'.  The 13 people around the table for the last supper on the day before Jesus' crucifixion on the Friday is one suggestion.  The other suggestion is when Philip IV of France had hundreds of Knights Templar arrested and put to death on Friday 13th October 1307.
News from the 'horse's mouth' that Nektarios and Anastasia, from Taverna Kastro in the Old Village, are now the proud parents of a baby girl.  Congratulations to the both of them from everyone who knows them or has eaten in Nik's taverna in the Old Village.
Our very dear friend and dance teacher Yorgos should be back from Volos today, after the national strike, and we will try to organize some dance classes from next week onwards in Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village.
The cloud cleared during the afternoon and we had another lovely hot day yesterday with clear blue skies and a wonderful Aegean sunset.  This morning is very warm but misty with blue skies and some cloud after a heavy overnight dew.
  • Thursday 12th:
Chef Demi will be cooking Beef Wellington's at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village this Sunday 15th from 1pm onwards.  Please make a reservation with Mary on 24240 66310 if you want to eat, as all the food is freshly cooked to order.
The Flying Cat didn't run yesterday and is not running today due to the Maritime Union strike but the Proteus car ferry ran yesterday from Alonissos and, according to Marine Traffic, is heading for Volos this morning.  Today is a national strike day in Greece so all public services will be closed.
We had a lovely hot day yesterday with the strong breeze dying away during the afternoon but this morning has started cloudy and quite still with some blue patches of sky and the sun trying to break through.  Early morning we heard what was either a light smattering of rain or a flock of birds tap-dancing on our roof!!
  • Wednesday 11th:
Today is Armistice Day and commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on November 11th 1918, the '11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month'.  Armistice Day was marked each year by a 2 minute silence at 11am.  We observed the 2 minute silence 9 years ago in Troyes on our drive from England, to begin our life on Alonissos.
Today is the final day for any donations of WARM clothing and shoes for the refugees that arrive by the thousands daily at Lesvos, Lemnos etc.  Donations will be accepted from 8am to 3pm across from the Dimos in the KEP office.
Another lovely day yesterday with blue skies and sunshine and, like the day before, the wind died away during the evening and we had a beautiful Aegean sunset.  This morning is beautifully warm again with blue skies and sunshine and the current forecast is for this weather to be with us to the weekend after next.
  • Tuesday 10th:
The Avra bar in Patitiri has re-opened after a short break and the Alonissos Cafe, Corali and Alkyon bars are all still open.  Tavernas Tzitzifia and Archipelagon in Patitiri are still serving food and we are waiting for Panos to re-open the Black Cat.  We are waiting for Yorgos to return from Athens to re-open Taverna Panselinos but in the Old Village the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) is open all day for food and drinks and the Book Shop and Aerides bar are currently open in the evenings.
It appeared yesterday that work had finished on laying the new water pipe just before the junction with the Old Village and Votsi roads.
We had a lovely day yesterday with plenty of sunshine and a very warm evening after the wind died away.  The weather this morning is similar to the last few days being lovely and warm although we again have a breeze blowing in the Old Village.
  • Monday 9th:
We haven't heard of any events this week but we will keep everyone informed if something takes place.
Work was continuing yesterday behind the cemetary in the Old Village to improve the car parking and the laying of the new water pipe has gone passed the Hotel Atrium and heading towards the petrol station.
Another lovely day yesterday and this morning is very much the same as yesterday except the wind has picked up quite strongly overnight.  At present the weather forecast is looking good through the week and over the coming weekend.
  • Sunday 8th:
If you are travelling in Greece next week be aware that a general strike has been called for Thursday 12th November.
Yesterday the road into and out of Patitiri was blocked off due to the water pipe works, so all road traffic either used the back streets near to the church to get up passed the road block or the 'super highway' to Paleohorafina.
Another lovely day yesterday and this morning is quite hazy with sunshine and cloudy skies but very little breeze in the Old Village.
  • Saturday 7th:

Absolutely lovely day yesterday and this morning has again started with sunshine and blue skies.

  • PLEASE HELP:  We can all help aleviate the pain and suffering of all the refugees who are trying to escape the war and are looking for hope amidst chaos.  From Tuesday 3rd until Wednesday 11th Angelos, the deputy mayor, would be grateful for any donations of WARM clothing and shoes for the refugees that arrive by the thousands daily at Lesvos, Lemnos etc.  Toddlers, kids, men and women are counting on all of us for help.  The Dimos will then sort out the clothing, package and ship them to where they are desperately needed.  Donations will be accepted daily from 8am to 3pm across from the Dimos in the KEP office and any other time of day by a phone call to 6989492100.  Call anytime for information at 6989492100.  We can all help by donating so please SHARE and donate.
  • Wednesday 4th:
We have posted all the Fun(d) Raising Group winter quizzes to the Alonissos Noticeboard page this morning.
Work is still proceeding with laying the new water pipe from Yialia to Patitiri and currently the workmen are beyond the disused cinema but the work has made driving hazardous because of the large trucks and concrete lorries up and down the road, to the car park behind the cemetary where work is taking place to extend the parking and make is safer.
Yesterday we had a day of morning cloud and afternoon blue skies and sunshine and this morning is beautifully warm and we have blue skies and sunshine.
  • Tuesday 3rd:
There has been a change to the 2nd Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village on Wednesday 25th which will now be hosted by us, rather than Nigel and Philippa.
We had a very pleasant day yesterday with plenty of sunshine after the morning cloud dispersed.  This morning has started with blue sky along with some high level thin cloud.
  • Monday 2nd:
No planned events this week, as far as we know, but if anything impromptu happens we will post it up.
We worked with Yorgos over the weekend on the Greek dance videos and found a video for Μηλια from Λευκαδα, although we dance with hands as W's whereas these ladies have hands as T's.  We have updated the Greek Dance Videos A - M page this morning.
Most of yesterday was grey and overcast with a strong wind blowing but no rain in the Old Village.  During the late evening and overnight the wind has abated but is still gusty and we have cloud with some blue sky.  At present the weather forecast is good into the middle of next week.
  • Sunday 1st:
Very windy day yesterday with grey and overcast skies but little or no rain.  This morning has started windy with grey skies but the weather is forecast to change from this afternoon for the better and currently the whole of next week and next weekend looks very nice.

Excellent evening at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village yesterday with a packed house for a very good quiz from Sue and Simon.  Chester, Nigel and Nik played live music afterwards and there was a lovely atmosphere in the place all night.  The next quiz is Nigel and Philippa's on Wednesday 25th November from 7pm.
Grey and overcast with drizzly rain during the morning yesterday and the wind picked up overnight.  This morning is grey and overcast with the threat of rain.  The current forecast is for this weather to continue over the weekend but Monday onwards the weather appears to change for the better.
  • Thursday 29th:
1st Fun(d) Raising Group winter quiz tonight, hosted by Sue and Simon, at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village from 7pm to 9pm.  Chester and friends will be playing live music after the quiz.
Dave went down for the Oxi Day celebration around the war memorial in Patitiri at the usual time of 10.30am only to find the religious service and the wreath laying had finished and a man was part way through reading an account of Oxi Day to the assembled crowd!!  After he finished the children went off in their year groups to march and the whole event was done and dusted by about 11.10am.
He had a wonderful afternoon yesterday at Di and Craig's house in Patitiri where they had organised a surprise party for Di's mum Polly who was celebrating her 70th birthday as well as her and John's 50th wedding anniversary this year.
We had another pleasant day yesterday although it got quite chilly in the evening but then it is almost the end of October.  This morning has started cloudy and overcast with a cold breeze blowing and the weekend forecast is still cloudy and drizzly.

The top of the donkey track from the Old Village to Patitiri had collapsed, where it joins the main road near the Megalos Mourtias turn, but the workmen have now finished the restoration work and have made a brilliant job of shoring up and making good the pathway.
Yesterday we had another day of cloud, blue skies and sunshine and this morning we have blue skies and sunshine.

  • Sunday 25th:
The date of next week's Fun(d) Raising Group's winter quiz at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village has changed from Wednesday 28th to Thursday 29th because of Oxi Day in Greece.
The clocks changed this morning and were put back by 1 hour to signal the start of winter on Alonissos.
We had grey cloud and rain all day yesterday but, as forecast, early evening the rain stopped and the wind died down.  This morning is DRY with mainly cloud and some blue skies with the sun trying to break through.  The forecast for the week ahead looks good at the moment up until the weekend.
  • Saturday 24th:
We have updated the Dance Alonissos page by splitting the YouTube videos of our dances into 2 separate sections and we have included almost all the dances we have learnt over the last 3½ years.  There are a couple of dances highlighted in red which are still work in progress.  We hope this will mean that no-one will have to video or write down the dance steps in the summer classes any longer and can access them on-line whenever they want.
Well, the incessant rain never stopped all day yesterday and the wind picked up strongly and changed direction during the evening and night.  This morning is the same as yesterday with grey skies, strong winds and rain and this is forecast to be with us all day but petering out into Sunday.  The only saving grace is that the forecast is good for Oxi Day next Wednesday 28th.
  • Friday 23rd:
Gerry had a CT Scan in Volos hospital yesterday but due to language problems we had no verbal results of the scan.  We have a hand-written letter for Gerry's oncologist in Athens which we will courier to her and visit for a consultation when the weather improves.
Grey, overcast and soggy day yesterday although the air temperature was always very warm for the time of year.  We had thunder and lightning with torrential rain during the night and this morning the sky is grey and overcast and we have incessant rain.  The current forecast is for this weather to last until tomorrow afternoon.
  • Wednesday 21st:
We are off on the ANES Lines ferry Proteus today at 2pm and, given the grotty weather approaching, will hope to be back on the 2.30pm Flying Cat 5 tomorrow after Gerry's 8am CT scan at Volos Hospital.  Next update to the website probably Friday morning.
Mid-morning Monday we had a short earth tremor which Dave heard and Gerry felt when sat on our bed upstairs.  We were told by Jan and Tony that there was another tremor just after midnight yesterday but we were too far gone into the 'land of nod' to have felt the 2nd quake.  According to BBNET the epicentre was 16km north of Alonissos.
The top of the donkey track, from the Old Village to Patitiri, where it joins the main road near the Megalos Mourtias turn has collapsed and workmen are currently building a new wall to make the path safe.
Yesterday was virtually identical to Monday with the cloud clearing and leaving a lovely warm day.  This morning we have overcast skies and already an early morning shower.  According to Windfinder the weather looks dodgy for the next few days until Sunday.
  • Tuesday 20th:
Don't forget that the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village is open all winter for food and drinks and the Fun(d) Raising Group's winter quizzes will be held there on the last Wednesday of the month along with the Not the One Hundred draw.  Dates and times to follow when Philippa is back from the UK.

Tavernas Black Cat in Patitiri and Peri Orexios in the Old Village are both closed at the moment and Panos told us that the Black Cat will re-open for the winter during the 2nd week of November.
The cloud rolled away during the late morning yesterday and left a lovely warm day with sunshine and blue skies.  This morning has started cloudy and overcast like yesterday but with the sun trying to break through.
  • FYI:  There will again be some disruption to the website this week as we are off to Volos on Wednesday for Gerry to have a CT scan on Thursday morning in Volos Hospital.  We hope to be back on the Thursday afternoon Flying Cat but nothing is certain until we get the result of the scan.
  • Monday 19th:
We still have 2 ferries running, the Express Skiathos and the Proteus, and the Flying Dolphin is still running along with the Flying Cat.
Work on laying the new water pipe from Yialia down to Patitiri has started and the main road is being dug up on one side so take care when driving down.
Work on the new jetty in Votsi is continuing and will carry on during the rest of the year to be completed by the December 31st deadline.
Both our 2 kittens, Harry and Babette, are fit and well and have grown considerably in the 3 weeks we have been away.
We arrived back yesterday afternoon on the Express Skiathos after a fantastic 3 week break.  The car sailed through its MOT and we had a great time in England with our longstanding friends from Broom and Langford in Bedfordshire.  We took a different route through France along the N (National) roads and stayed in a completely different set of hotels from last year, along with one farm in the Champagne region of France.  The only exceptions were our usual stop off in Rimini at the Hotel Brittania to see Stephan and also at the wonderful Ferme de Wolphus Gîte, near to the port of Calais, run by Jean-Jacques and Mimi.
Lovely and warm day yesterday with temperatures in the mid 20's C (high 70's F) and little or no breeze.  This morning has started grey and overcast but not particularly cold.  The forecast for Thursday through the weekend looks abysmal with high winds and rain, some torrential.

We were told late morning after the dance class that over 100 refugees were being housed in the amphitheatre in Patiriti, waiting to go off on the late afternoon ferry and were desperate for clothes, food and drinks.  Fortunately our dear friend Renée was taking some clothes down to the Dimos, so she very kindly took donations of money from all the people sat outside Taverna Panselinos to buy water, milk and juices to help the adults and children.
We had a hot and humid day yesterday and this morning is cloudy and overcast with a light breeze blowing but the sun is trying to break through the cloud.

  • Missing Kittens Alert:  We lost 2 of our kittens yesterday morning while our house was being cleaned and we were out.  All 4 kittens were apparently on the sofa but shot out the door when the vacuum cleaner started.  We had mum and 2 kittens on the sofa when we came back but Bob (stripey ginger) and Gordon (ginger with white) didn't return last night and they are not back this morning.  We understand that something terrible might have befallen them but equally some kind person may have thought they were abandoned by their mother and taken them off to feed and take care of them.  If anyone knows anything about them, or their whereabouts, can they please contact Dave on (0030) 6974245980, for better or for worse.

Sadly we no longer have any kittens in the house!!  Yesterday morning Dave couldn't find the kittens at home, in the bottom of our vegetable rack, even though mum was around the house.  Fortunately, Netty's dog Petra discovered them in the end of the garden of Stathys's family's house behind us.  Weather looking dodgy we relocated them back to our house and all 5 kittens ended up outside in their cat food tray!!  Coming back from shopping early afternoon we found mum grabbing the last kitten and, picking it up by the scruff of the neck, she took it up to James and Victoria's top patio area.  However, early evening Dave went to check on the kittens there and they had again been relocated by mum and we have no idea where they are, although late evening she came back to the house.  So we are currently kittenless, Tassie is no longer 'walking on guilded splinters' (great song by Dr John The Night Tripper) but the house seems a little less full of life without the 5 havoc creating little gremlins.  Hopefully mum will bring them back to where they were born, but if not then at least they all had a good start to life and mum had plenty of food to feed them properly.

Cindy has returned with her kittens from the old olive press but sadly one of the 4 ginger kittens hasn't made it.  However, mum and the 5 remaining kittens are firmly ensconced in our ground floor studio bedroom.  Although only 3 weeks old they have found the outside dry catfood tray and are happily eating dry food while still feeding on mum.  Tassie, our lovely terrier, is being driven crazy by the kittens because she still has very strong maternal instincts but Cindy rubs around her all the time, so her smell is on the fur on Tassie's legs and the kittens now think she is a surrogate mother!!  We will try and get some piccies of Tass, Cindy and the kittens in due course.
The banking restrictions have been eased and instead of only 60 euro per transaction per day we can now draw up to 420 euro per transaction per day from our Greek bank account.  For anyone coming to Alonissos from the UK the euro rate to the pound is still very advantageous .
The new bus timetable has been added to the Alonissos Bus page which can be found on the Alonissos Pages section of the website.
The island seems to be rammed with visitors at the moment, cars and people everywhere, and we hope this will help to compensate for the slow start to the season.
It rained for a while yesterday morning for the first time in ages and was cloudy until the late afternoon when the sun started to break through and it became very hazy and humid.  No lights on Evia were visible last night but the sea off the coast of Skopelos was covered in lights from the squid boats.  This morning has started cloudy with some blue skies but with a strong breeze with a cool edge to it.

A couple of ladies we met recently said to us that our dog Tassie is a Wheaten Terrier.  Sure enough, when we googled Wheaten Terriers there she was on the screen except she has a retreiver's tail and not a terriers tail.

We have returned from Athens and Gerry's blood tests continue to improve and we will get the results for the cancer markers towards the end of the month.  The CT scan was cancelled by Euromedica in Athens at the last minute, so we will try to get a scan organised in Volos this month.  As Gerry is now off chemotherapy and on a maintenance schedule, she had the first treatment of 'Avastin' on Thursday and we hope the next treatment will be in Volos, as the summer heat and travelling have taken their toll on Gerry going to Athens.
The island is starting to fill up with visitors, better late than never, but we don't yet know how the overall numbers compare to this time last year.
Yesterday and the prevous 2 days have been scorchingly hot, even for the end of July, but this morning has started cooler with a strong breeze and cloud cover.

The celebrations for Agia Paraskevi didn't happen last night because we heard there was no money for the Dimos to pay either a local live group or bring one onto the island.  However, it was a real shame that there was no music, via a PA system and speakers, because everywhere on the harbour area was full and people would have got up to dance.

For the first week of July the island seems much quieter than usual at this time of year and we can only assume this is a reaction to current events in Greece.  Hopefully, once the uncertainties have been removed there will be a pick-up in the number of visitors to the island.

  • Special Announcements:
    1. We have arrived back from Athens with the brilliant news that Gerry has finished with the chemotherapy and after tests in 3 weeks time will be starting maintenance from the end of July into August in Volos.  Although her medical oncologist Flora Zagouri at the Alexandra Hospital in Athens and her radio oncologist Maria Marinaki at Euromedica in Athens have pulled Gerry back from the brink, we want to thank everyone, from all over the world, who have sent their thoughts and prayers to Gerry over this very difficult few months, as we are sure this has contributed significantly to her recovery.
    2. Sadly, due to the referendum and the banking restrictions in Greece, the 1st Alonissos Traditional Dance Festival, planned for this weekend, has been cancelled.  This is such a shame because 30 people have put in countless hours of dance practise to perform for the honour of their island at this inaugural event.  Thanks especially to Yorgos Bellos for his infinite patience in training us to within an inch our our lives!!

  • ASAP News:  A charity vet is coming to the island this weekend for two days as part of ASAP's neutering programme.  As we now have vets on the island she will only be neutering strays, not owned animals or doing consultations.  If you have any ASAP cat baskets could you please return them to Jane and Guy's house or phone them to arrange collection.  If you know of any stray cats that need neutering please let a member of the ASAP team (Julia, Dinah, Guy and Jane) know before Sunday.
The ASAP stall is now back in the port but we are not allowed to sell items but cards and 2016 calendars are available for new members or for a donation.  We are hoping that the stall will be manned each morning for a few hours.  2016 desk and wall calendars and packs of five cards with paintings by local artists are available from the ASAP team and Claudia's shop in Patitiri, as well as events during the summer.
ASAP has been having discussions with the Dimos about how we can work together to improve animal welfare on the island.  A main area of concern is feeding cats by the road and bins.  We are requesting that food is not put down at the road side and that bins are always shut after rubbish is dumped.  We hope this will reduce the number of cats that are run over.  ASAP runs a feeding programme throughout the year at sites away from the road.  Donations to support this programme are always welcome and you can donate online through the website at www.asap-animalz.org.

We have added a couple of videos to the Greek Dance Videos page.  One is a dance from Christina's sessions in the school gym and the other is one of the dances that will be performed at Agios Georgios on Thursday.  Both are relatively easy dances but with lovely music.  We'll update the music page in due course.
Yesterday afternoon the dance group performing at the festival of Agios Georgios on April 23rd had the penultimate practice session in the amphitheatre in Patitiri.  The programme of dances has been organized and the dancing went well.  Final practice session tomorrow at 8pm in the school gym before the big day.
A very pleasantly warm day yesterday and this morning starts quite windy with blue skies and cloud.
  • Annie Green's Panto Report:  Doesn't get better each year?  OH YES indeed it does.  Four nights of very enthusiastic audiences is proof of that.  What am I talking about, the GIT's Pantomime of course. With fantastic scenery, very clever, moveable sets and amazing costumes, the cast couldn't fail to show the extraordinary talent they all have so that when in costume they take on the character they are playing.  I will only give first names as regular readers will known who everyone is, but there are one or two new to the group and who I will mention now.
(POLLY).  Hilariously played by Dimitris Iliopoulos, wonderfully funny with such a great talent, does he sing to his bees?
(KING MINOS of CRETE).  A very convincing King portrayed by Chef Demi, he loves his costume so maybe you will see him in it sometimes.
(MERMAIDS/URCHINS).  Three lovely girls, Ariadne Iliopoulou, Maria Lena Skiani, Dimitra Karakatsani.  These girls had several costume changes which they handled very calmly.  They wowed the audiences with their cute song and dance and scared them to death with their Urchin spikes.
(JACK).  Last seen in a very 'girly' role Anastasia Markou a convincing, likeable and happy cabin boy, she has great stage presence.
(DAIDALUS).  What can I say about this very clever actor that I haven't said in previous reports?  His talent and hilarious 'one-liners' are somewhat of a legend now, absolutely great Nigel.
(ICARUS).  Nicky put her heart and soul into this part and it certainly worked, what a performance, voice, movement and very convincing acting, really great.
(ADMIRAL ETSI).  Oh Nik, not a dame this time, however you showed that you can still wow the audience playing a male role, another great performer.
(CAPTAIN KETSI) played by Marilena.  Again the acting was superb, difficult part to play but Marilena always manages to take on the part and make it her own.
(MAVRI).  Lyn played this Octopus to perfection, she is so very good with her facial expressions and different tones of voice (not to mention volume), and her coping with the eight tentacles was hilarious, her singing was great as usual, brilliant performance.
(SALMON ELLA).  Debbie was absolutely great as the fawning salmon, her acting and singing were terrific, awesome I think is the word.
(MARINA) played brilliantly by Julia.  She was a perfect match for Icarus and she showed how good her acting is with her constantly changing moods, sad, happy, funny, flirty, bored.  Julia can do it all, amazing and highly entertaining.
(ANTONIA TUNA) Dinah player this glamorous tuna with great panache.  She has a great sense of humour and it came across extremely well, especially in the singing and dancing, very well done.
(CORAL).  Voulla mesmerised the everyone from her first appearance, she can act, sing, dance and is always 'playing the audience' and they love it, absolutely brilliant, though it has to be said that should Voulla ever want to team up with Di as a 'double act' they could have something special to entertain the tourists with!!!
(MR CYCLOPS) John did a very good job of convincing the audience that he only had one eye, he was well cast in the part and looked and sounded great, well done John.
(MRS CYCLOPS).  Quite a difficult part to play and Renee acted it very well, her blend of tenderness and crossness with Mr C was just right and she was hilarious during the 'save all your kisses for me' song.
(YIAYIA) was played by Annie Green.
(VOICE of POSEIDON).  This was very effectively recorded by Simon Darragh.
That was the cast, now I must mention the (STAGEHANDS).  These were Netty Haddleton, Jan Moon {and flown in at great expense at the last minute I understand} Sue Jones.   The wonderful set, designed and painted by Chester was again greatly appreciated by all.   The stunning costumes, worked on for many hours and displaying so much clever talent was the work of Dawn and Sara and some props by Nik.  Hair and wig, help with makeup and 'general factotem' was ably supplied by Wendy Frankland.  Lighting was operated by Yiannis Karakatsanis and was his first time with the group, he did a great job.  Les Green and Nigel compiled the sound effects and the sound operation was by Dawn.  Les video'd the performances and Nigel will edit them.  Refreshment Bar served by Doug, Wendy and Sue and was greatly appreciated.
I think I have mentioned everyone concerned now, 'OH NO' one I nearly forgot.  The extremely clever and talented PHILIPPA SMITH.  All of the Pantomimes have met with great audience approval and delight and it is reflected in the fact that the theatre is full each night.  Great work again Philippa, here's to the next time, so WATCH THIS SPACE!

We went to the final night of the panto yesterday evening and again it was another fantastic spectacle with an wonderful set and beautiful costumes.  Everyone acted, sang and danced brilliantly and the stage staff seemlessly moved the scenary and changed the props.  Philippa, as always, did a great job in writing and casting the panto and the lighting and sound engineers were always spot-on with the changes on the stage.  We await Annie Green's full panto report.
The project to enlarge and improve Votsi harbour has take off in earnest when, a couple of days ago, a dredger arrived in Votsi and a large barge arrived in Patitiri, to transport the huge concrete blocks that are lined up along the jetty where the fishing boats tie up.

Dave had a dance class with Yorgos at Taverna Panselinos in the the Old Village yesterday and, between watching a video on Yorgos' laptop and mimicking the steps, the whole of the new Hasapiko was danced continuously at the end of 1 hour, although sadly not entirely glitch free.  There is a dance lesson with Yorgos at Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village from 11am tomorrow and if no-one else turns up then we will perfect the new Hasapiko.

  • Help Needed:  Simon Darragh is having a month away in England from around the middle of May to the middle of June.  Simon adopted Yiannis' dog Ellie and is concerned that she is now so attached to him and his house, that she would have problems if denied access to the house or not getting enough human company.  Ellie is very well known in the Old Village and is a lovely and very good-natured dog.  Simon is trying to find someone to live in his house for that period - rent, electricity, wifi etc. free of course - in return for feeding Ellie and generally looking after the house.  If anyone can help Simon, or knows anyone who can help, then please contact him by phone on 24240 66202 or by e-mail at simondarragh@hotmail.com.

We understand that the island has a new priest.  Father Luke has come to be the religious leader of our community from a church on the island of Skiathos.  He speaks very good English and we hope, like our dear departed Father Avraam, he will be a great asset to the island of Alonissos.
Chef Demi (from Taverna Astrofegia) cooking at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village tomorrow from 1 - 10pm.
Dave had another private lesson with Yorgos yesterday, ostensibly to practice the new Hasapiko, but Yorgos couldn't get his laptop to fire up.  After much switching on and off, bashing and crashing the computer keys and verbally abusing the laptop in Greek and English it still refused to work, so we used the music from our website via Yorgos' iPad and we went through a few newer and older dances.

Very mixed day yesterday for the weather with heavy rain starting late morning and ending late afternoon and then a nice end to the day.  Overnight the wind picked up and we have the odd shower of rain this morning but the sky is overcast and bright.  There is currently a very good forecast for the week ahead.
  • FYI:  There will be a meeting at the Dimos offices in Patitiri at 11am on Tuesday 31st March.  The mayor and several of his team will be attending the meeting and it is open to all.  Plans will be discussed for the clean-up day on 26th April.  The beaches will be cleaned as every year, but, depending on the number of volunteers, other areas needing attention can also be cleaned.  If you know of particular eye-sores, it will be a good time to add them to the list!  The meeting will also be an opportunity to hear what is happening on the island, raise issues of concern and offer ideas about what the Dimos can do to improve the island for residents and tourists.  The Dimos is very keen for non-Greeks who live on the island to be fully involved with community life and would like to hold meetings every 6 months or so.

  • Good Morning:  From Dave and Gerry to all the visitors from around the world to our website.  We apologize for the disruption in information on the website but we were detained in Athens far longer than aniticipated.  Gerry had 3 consultations in 2 days when we first arrived and was advised that an immediate start of simultaneous radiotherapy and chemotherapy was essential.  We eventually managed to get a 'window of opportunity' to come home to Alonissos but chemotherapy will continue on a weekly basis until we are advised by Gerry's oncologist that a 3 weekly schedule can be put in place.  This means we will go to Athens on a Monday and back to Alonissos on Wednesday.  Everyone in Athens is very positive there will be a successful outcome to the treatment.  Bear with us and we will update the site on the days we are here.  Thank you to everyone who has sent kind thoughts, love, hugs and kisses to Gerry.

We had a fabulous 5 course Chinese buffet, cooked by Chef Demi, at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village yesterday afternoon.  We had a light soup followed by a crispy salad and then a spring roll and 2 chinese won tun.  The main course was sweet and sour chicken or pork and then banana fritters for dessert.  The cost was 18 euro per head which was outstanding value for the quality and amount of food we were served.

  • Friday 13th:  Friday 13th and what a Jonah day!  Gerry is superstitious and Dave held off telling her the day and date until she eventually realized.  After a lovely lunchtime session with friends in the Black Cat in Patitiri we came home and got the log burner going mid-afternoon.  After about 90 minutes there was a loud roaring noise and the window shutters started to squeak.  We thought it was an earthquake, so went outside to find nothing.  Back inside we still had a roaring sound and we discovered our chimney was on fire!!  Dave called the Fire Brigade and they arrived within 5 minutes from Patitiri.  Meanwhile, Gerry had chucked water into the stove and the explosion of steam had doused the fire.  The Fire Brigade were brilliant and, unbeknownst to us, even after they had finfished they stayed for an extra 15 minutes to check the outside of the chimnay stack and then called on us to check all was well inside before they finally left.

Strange day with the weather yesterday.  The wind blew and the mists disappeared and we had blue skies and sunshine.  Early afternoon it clouded over and shortly before 2pm we had thunder and it started to rain heavily.  By 3pm the storm had passed over and the skies cleared and we had sunshine again and a lovely clear night.  This morning starts with a light breeze and sunshine with blue skies but the forecast is still dodgy from tomorrow morning until Tuesday.

Exercise class with Vangelis in the school gym in Patitiri tomorrow from 2.30pm.
Greek dance class with Christina in the school gym in Patitiri tomorrow from 6pm.
Nice day yesterday after the sun had burnt off the morning mists.  It clouded over during the afternoon and the wind picked up.  This morning has started pretty much like yesterday except there is a strong gusty wind blowing.  The forecast is still that the weather will take a turn for the worst over the weekend.
  • Thursday 5th:
Assuming Vangelis has recovered from his illness there will be an exercise class in the school gym in Patitiri from 2.30pm.

The ferry timetables have changed.  We were sat having lunch in the Black Cat after the meeting yesterday when the Hellenic Seaways car ferry, Apollon Hellas, unexpectedly came into the marina in Patitiri.  According to OpenSeas the Anes Lines ferry has gone out of service and the Apollon Hellas is running Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
There was a good turn out for the Carnival meeting at the Black Cat in Patitiri yesterday.  The float has been organized and ideas were talked about for costumes, banners and props.  The float will be dressed outside Jan and Tony's house in the Old Village from midday on Sunday February 22nd, prior to going down to Patitiri, if anyone wants to come along and help.
Very breezy again yesterday but a generally pleasant day with afternoon temperatures up to 19 deg C.  The wind eased off overnight and this morning is relatively calmer with a mixture of cloud, sunshine and blue skies and the forecast for the week ahead looks generally good up to the weekend.

The wind blasted us again overnight and was blowing strongly during the day, although due to the southerly direction of the wind the air temperature was very pleasant.  Also the air is very clear and when there are no sea mists you can see detail of the ravines of the face of Mount Dirfis on Evia and also see Mount Athos on the Halkidiki peninsular.

Interesting that for probably the first time since we arrived to live on Alonissos, over 8 years ago, that Hellenic Seaways have already put up a summer timetable for the Express Skiathos ferry and Flying Cat 5!!
The wind picked up during the day yesterday and we had a very blustery evening and over the night.  This morning has started grey and overcast but dry and the southerly wind is still blasting away and is forecast to die away during the day today but get much worse overnight and then ease off tomorrow and into the start of the week.
  • Friday 30th:
Greek dance class with Christina in the school gym in Patitiri tomorrow from 6pm.
Around 2 dozen people, including Mary from the Arhondostasi in the Old Village, were present at Gordon and Linda's house at 5pm Greek time to pay tribute to Linda.  Everyone brought a candle and flowers, including rosemary for remembrance.  We went indoors where Di read information about Linda and Val read a biblical text.  Pictures were taken to send to Gordon and his daughter Victoria.
Generally soggy day yesterday with rain and drizzle on and off for most of the day.  This morning is cloudy and overcast with a chilly breeze but gale to severe gale force winds are currently forecast for across the weekend.

The Dimos theatre was packed solid yesterday for the ceremony to make Papoulis (Father Gregorias) an honorary citizen on Alonissos on his name day and after 50 years as a priest on the island.  The ceremony was organized wonderfully by the Dimos and lasted around 30 minutes.  We took some photos and will post a page in due course.

What a difference a week makes because last Thursday we had snow and sleet and yesterday was a lovely day with sunshine and blue skies but always a slight edge to the breeze.  There was a lovely sunset and a very starry night.  This morning has started like yesterday with blue skies and sunshine but the overnight dew has make it feel somewhat damp this morning, although this will burn off with the sun.
  • Wednesday 14th:
Opening night and pasta night at Foodbar Helios in Patitiri with all pasta dishes at 5 euro each.
The strong winds died away during the day and the skies cleared and we had a pleasant afternoon and evening.  This morning is bright and sunny and a very pleasant temperature for the end of the 2nd week of January.
  • FYI:  From tomorrow, Wednesday 14th of January, Foodbar Helios in Patitiri will be open again Monday to Saturday but closed on Sunday.  Every Wednesday will be pasta night with all pasta dishes for 5 euros.
  • Tuesday 13th:
The wind blew hard all yesterday and we had rain during the morning and late afternoon.  There was a clear evening and overnight there has been no more rain.  This morning there is a strong wind still blowing, although the sun is shining and we have cloud with some blue sky.
  • Monday 12th:
This coming week we have the following events:
    1. Wednesday Pasta night at Foodbar Helios in Patitiri with all pasta dishes at 5 euro each.
    2. Thursday First day of the exercise classes for ladies with Vangelis in the school gym in Patitiri from 2.30pm.
    3. Saturday Exercise classes for ladies with Vangelis in the school gym in Patitiri from 2.30pm.
    4. Sunday Meeting about Carnival (Sunday February 22nd) to be held at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village around 1pm.  Everyone welcome.
    5. Sunday Chef Demi (from Taverna Astrofegia) cooking at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village from 1 - 10pm.
There was a power loss around 8am this morning for about 30 minute.  Probably not a local island problem as the phones went out as well.
We had a lovely meal at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village yesterday where Chef Demi did Pork Exotiko, served in a greaseproof parcel.
Glorious day yesterday with sunshine and temperatures in the mid-afternoon up to 18 deg C.  As forecast, the high winds came in during the night and the rain started around 8.30am.
  • Sunday 11th:
Chef Demi (from Taverna Astrofegia) will be cooking at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village today from 1 - 10pm.
We met Netty off the Proteus yesterday evening and then had a final drink in the Black Cat in Patitiri with Chris and Kate who moved off the island this morning, on the Proteus, to a village near Kalamata on the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece.
We had a short but intensive dance class yesterday morning with Yorgos at Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village.  Dave taught Yorgos and Gerry to dance 'Stamoula' and then the 2 of us danced our original 'Hasapiko' with Yorgos watching and then we had 3 goes at the new 'Hasapiko'.  Yorgos is away in Athens for a couple of weeks and then dance classes will start in Taverna Panselinos and the school gym in Patitiri.
We again had a pleasant day yesterday with sunshine and cloud and temperatures in double figures with a calm and starry night.  This morning is breezy from the south but with blue skies and sunshine.  The forecast suggests we have a slug of high winds and rain arriving Monday morning for 24 hours and the rest of the week is looking good.
  • Saturday 10th:
Greek dance class with Yorgos this morning at Taverna Panselinos in the Old Village from around 11am.
We had a pleasant day yesterday with sunshine and cloud and temperatures in double figures with a calm and starry night.  This morning is calm and overcast but not particularly cold.
  • Friday 9th:
We had a grey sky with snow and sleet yesterday up until around midday with temperatures around 1 - 2 deg C.  During the afternoon, as forecast, the wind died down and the weather started to improve.  We had the makings of a sunset in the distance, amongst the cloud cover, and this morning is calm, bright and cold with sunshine and blue sky.
  • Carnival:  Is usually the last Sunday before Clean Monday and for 2015 this means February 22nd.  We need a theme for this year, so we need to get our thinking caps on.  A meeting will be arranged when everyone is back on the island.
  • Thursday 8th:
Horrible day yesterday with grey skies and intermittent snow and sleet falling from around 2pm.  The wind dropped but everywhere was white.  This morning there is snow on our car and all the roofs around us and it is bitterly cold, although the wind is still quite light.  We have already had a flurry of snow this morning but the good thing is that it hasn't frozen overnight.
  • Wednesday 7th:
The 'Blessing of the Waters' service on the port of Patitiri started around 10.45am yesterday but not many islanders braved the cold weather to attend.  Father Avraam conducted the service and 2 boys went into the water in the harbour to get the cross.  The service lasted around 20 minutes.  wWe will post up a page in due course.
We had a mix of cloud and sunshine yesterday but with a bitingly cold wind blowing and a flurry of snow early evening.  This morning is cloudy with some blue sky and a strong cold wind blowing.  However, this bad weather is forecast to improve for the weekend but Monday is not looking good at the moment.
  • Tuesday 6th:
Epiphany and a public holiday in Greece with the 'Blessing of the Waters' service on the port of Patitiri from mid morning.
12th night and the time to take down the Christmas decorations and start to think about a theme for Carnival 2015.
We escaped most of the rain during the day yesterday but the wind was strong and cold in the Old Village.  We had a flurry of snow late evening and overnight we had snow, which is frozen on the front and top of our car.  This morning there is a bitter northerly wind blowing, although the sun is shining and we have blue skies with some cloud.
  • Monday 5th:
This coming week we have the following events:
    1. Tuesday Epiphany and a public holiday in Greece with the 'Blessing of the Waters' service on the port of Patitiri from mid morning.
    2. Sunday Chef Demi (from Taverna Astrofegia) cooking at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village from 1 - 10pm.
Tomorrow is Epiphany and is a public holiday so most of the shops will be closed.  There is a early morning service in the church of Agia Paraskevi in Patitiri and, weather permitting, the 'Blessing of the Waters' service on the port of Patitiri from mid morning.
OK day yesterday but the wind picked up much earlier in the afternoon than expected and battered the Flying Cat and Flying Dolphin coming to Alonissos.  This morning is quite breezy and overcast with intermittent drizzle.
  • Sunday 4th:
Chef Demi (from Taverna Astrofegia) will be cooking at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village today from 1 - 10pm.
The 'Santa's Surprise' bauble smashing game is changing with Dave having scored 11,855 points this morning and this is now the target to beat!!  Dave's ultimate target is 12,000 points and then stop.
A dry but cold moring yesterday but during the day the winds eased off and changed to a more southerly direction which raised the temperature to double figures.  This morning is calm with mostly cloud but warmer than last week.  The forecast for tonight through to Wednesday evening is more rain and high winds but not as severe as last week and then looking good towards the weekend.
  • Saturday 3rd:
An amazing thing happened yesterday.  Arfa's lifelong friend Ollie, who has spent most of the last 4 years up the steps towards the Old Village, suddenly appeared at the door around 5pm, came in and settled himself down on the sofa next to Gerry.  During all these years he has come back every day to eat on our kitchen window ledge but never bothered to come in the house.  Today around 3pm he came down again and is currently curled up on the sofa.  In all the recent bad weather he never came back indoors.  Does he instinctively know that Arfa has gone and has he come back to fill the gap?
Our cousin Bob Coles has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year's Honours List.  The citation reads "Robert Arthur COLES, Fleet Manager, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service.  For services to the Fire and Rescue Service and to the community".  Bob retired recently after 50 years with Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and does charity work with the Rotary Club.
As we thought there were virtually no businesses open in Patitiri yesterday.
We had a strong icy wind blowing during the day yesterday but it eased right down during the late afternoon and we had a cold, still and starry night.  This morning is still cold and calm with sun and blue skies.
  • Friday 2nd:
The 'Santa's Surprise' bauble smashing game is hotting up with Dave having a highest score of 11,381 points but our dear friend Sigi Scholtz has weighed in with a fantastic 11,682 points and this is the target to beat.
We had a phone call from our dance teacher Yorgos and he will probably be back next Wednesday and we expect dance lessons to commence soon after.
There were 5 couples who braved the elements yesterday for a New Year's Day get together at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village.
Yesterday started as the previous few days with grey skies, an icy wind blowing a gale and a mixture of rain, sleet and snow and temperatures around 1 - 2 deg C.  During the afternoon, as forecast, the wind died down and the rain stopped.  Overnight has been dry but we have a strong icy wind blowing but the forecast looks OK for the weekend but the bad weather could be back next week again.
  • Obituary to Arfa:  Our very first cat on Alonissos died under our coffee table on New Year's Eve around 8.30pm.  Around 2 weeks after we arrived at Villa Aliki from the UK in November 2006 we thought that a howling banshee was outside our front door one morning.  When we opened the door this small white and orange kitten came rushing into the lounge and made himself at home.  He was always a lovely cat and very good with other cats and our dogs.  In recent months he started having problems with his nose and ears due to the UV radiation in the summer.  Arfa is survived by his lifelong friend Ollie, who Arfa introduced into the household about a month after he arrived.  For those who never met him, this is Arfa in August 2007 on top of our outside BBQ.  He will be sorely missed.  RIP
  • Thursday 1st:
We didn't go out and about in the Old Village last night, due to the atrocious weather, so we are organizing a small New Year Day get together at the Arhondostasi (Mary's Bar) in the Old Village from around 1pm.
We had a really crappy New Year's Eve, probably the worst ever.  The rain and icy high winds outside made it depressing.  Our log burner wouldn't take off properly and every time it did we had a room full of smoke with the wind blowing down the chimney and into the ducting.  It was difficult to get the room hot enough during the afternoon as, with most Greek houses, you can only have one 3KW fire on at a time as the earth trips go.  Around 8.30pm one of our oldest cats came down from upstairs, went under the coffee table and let out a strange noise and promptly died!!  Around 9.30pm we had a series of small power cuts and then the weather was too bad to go out and party, not that by 10.30pm we felt like a party.
A really dismal day yesterday with grey skies, an icy wind blowing a gale and a mixture of rain, sleet and snow and temperatures around 1 - 2 deg C.  Again no change to the weather overnight and this morning has started as horrible and dismal as yesterday with an icy wind still blowing and rain, sleet and snow.  It looks like this weather may abate and disappear this afternoon into early evening.
Kalo mina (have a good month) from Dave and Gerry.
