Carnival on Alonissos - 18th February 2007

The Carnival celebration was held in Patitiri and Votsi on the afternoon of February 18th, the Sunday before Clean Monday and the start of Lent.  Easter this year is very early and the good weather enjoyed for most of January turned cold, wet, cloudy and rainy.  We arrived down in Patitiri around the Dimos Offices around 1.45pm to see the gathering of the floats and participants in the Carnival getting themselves organised.  The procession started around 2pm and headed off towards Votsi.  A contingent of English residents decided to do "Ghost Busters" as a theme this year.  We headed off down to the harbour to await their arrival and shelter from the cold with a drink.

Over 2 hours later the Carnival procession arrived around the bottom of Pelasgon with a mechanical digger with some young Greeks sat aloft.  The floats stopped in the street behind the harbour and food was given out while dancing took place on the harbour and various people made speeches.  About an hour later the procession of floats took off back to the Dimos Offices and we followed them up in the increasingly rainy conditions.  After a drink in the Taverna Koutouki accompanied by fire crackers and fireworks outside we wended our way back to Villa Aliki leaving the hardy souls outside drinking and dancing.  Next year we look forward to being part of the Carnival, rather than just onlookers.
