Carnival on Alonissos - 13th March 2016

Posters advertising Carnival went up around Patitiri prior to the event with a meeting time of 1.30pm outside the Dimos offices in Patitri.  The weather forcast for Carnival day was abysmal and most people were probably expecting Carnival to be cancelled.  However, like 2014 the weather on the Saturday before and on the Monday after Carnival were dreadful but the morning rain cleared and the weather on Carnival Sunday was dry and pleasant.  Gerry was too tired to do Carnival this year after a week of tests and chemotherapy in Athens, so Dave left home around 1pm and we all met in Patitiri at our designated place.

Our theme this year was the Chinese New Year of the Monkey, so as our float we had a pagoda on a trailer driven by a monkey on a quad bike!!  However, the main part of our Carnival spectacle was a large Chinese dragon for which a huge debt of thanks is due to Doug and Sara, who have put a massive amount of time and energy into this project.  At Kostas' call the dragon left its den in Patitiri and made a spectacular entrance to the front of the Dimos offices breathing smoke (Carbon Dioxide).

More floats arrived and by the time the Carnival procession left from the Dimos offices, heading downwards towards the harbour, there were seven floats including ours, with the Dimos float again cooking souvlakis on a BBQ and selling them with bread for 1 euro each.  As usual Panayioti was the voice of Carnival and introductions were made for each of the floats and kindly Voula did the introduction for us.  You can see Dave before the start of the procession in his red and black outfit along with other Chinese members of the group.

The procession headed off earlier than in previous years which may have been because of the threat of rain.  The floats assembed on the harbour front along with the Carnival throng and the Greek dance music started and Dave joined in with the dancing.  The gypsies thrilled the crowd with a brilliant dance routine led by the inimitable Vangelis and after some food and drink the Carnival procession left the harbour front and headed up Pelasgon towards the church of Agia Paraskevi and then onwards to Votsi.  Our Chinese dragon made its way to Votsi but Dave opted out to make sure Gerry was OK.

We have had nothing but wonderful comments about our float and the Chinese dragon and again it was a fantastic coming together of the community on Alonissos.  Next year Easter Sunday is April 16th and so Carnival will be on the 26th of February.
