English Dance Group at the Kaloyianneia Celebrations 5th May 2012

We had Greek dance lessons with Yorgos Bellos from Taverna Panselinos for 10 days after we danced at the Agios Yorgos (St. George's) day celebrations and he made us learn 5 new dances of which 2 would be danced with the adult dance group and 3 on our own.  Yorgos chose the dances and then put us through a severe daily dance routine.  On May 5th we had to be at the old Taverna Koutouki at 6pm to run through our dance routines.  Yorgos banned us from drinking alcohol before we danced, then subsequently admitted he had 2 glasses of wine to calm his nerves before he went on and told us he meant the school children weren't allowed a drink before performing!!!!!

So, we sat at the side like we were on execution row from 6.30pm until after 9pm before our first dance with the adult dance group.  Then we had to sit and wait for both the school groups to perform before we went on.  By this time the anxiety levels had built up and one of the male adult dancers Panayioti came over and asked if we needed a Tsipouro to calm our nerves.  When the time came for us to perform we walked out in dance order and it's for you to judge how we did.  Yorgos joined us for one dance because we were so unfamiliar with the music that we couldn't instantly recognize the changes in step.  We had a fantastic reaction from the crowd and people have been stopping us in the street in Patitiri to complement us all on our Greek dancing.
