Oxi Day - 28th October 2017

Dave went down to the Dimos offices around 10.15am as people were gathering from the church and the service at the war memorial started when Father Lucas arrived around 10.30am.  Father Lucas gave a short service in front of the war memorial followed by the laying of wreaths by the Mayor of Alonissos, the chiefs of the Police, Port Police and Fire Service, followed by children from different age groups within the schools and also the Scouts.  There was a 1 minute silence followed by the singing of the Greek National Anthem.  A reading was then made about the details of the background to Oxi Day.  After the ceremony ended the children went off to get into the groups.

The Scout drum band led the marching parade, with fewer children from the schools than in previous years.  The children from the infant's school were first with the Greek flag, followed by children from the lower and upper schools by year group and then ending with the Scouts.  Here is a montage of the school groups and the scouts marching.  Each group were enthusiastically applauded as they went passed and all were obviously very proud to be part of the Ohi Day celebration.  It was touch and go with the weather as the wind picked up strongly during the morning but the rain held off and all went well.
