Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Old Village War Memorial at Panagia 2012

On Wednesday 15th August the island celebrated Panagia with a morning service in the church of Koimisis tis Theotokou at the cemetary, followed by a wreath laying ceremony in Plateia Iroon in the Old Village at the war memorial to the 9 islanders killed on August 15th 1944.  The ceremony was due to start at 11am but was around 20 minutes late.  When we arrived the war memorial had a red board containing pictures of the victims.

Father Avraam started the ceremony with a short religious service to the martyrs, followed by the ceremonial laying of wreaths by the Mayor of Alonissos (twice) on behalf of the Dimos (Council) and the war veterans, senior members of the Police, Coast Guard and Fire Service, Panayioti on behalf of the Old Village Society, Dr. Yorgos Athanasiou on behalf of the Communist Party and 3 members of the families of the victims.

There was a minutes silence to remember the victims and then the Mayor of Alonissos gave a speech followed by Dr. Yorgos Athanasiou who read a detailed account of the events of August 15th 1944.  We are very fortunate that Simon Darragh has obtained a copy of the account and has kindly translated the account and provided a précis for everyone to read.  The ceremony lasted around 30 minutes and the Dimos provided sweets and Tsipouro after the finish.
