PapaVasilis Memorial - Lower Old Town

This memorial was erected during the early part of 2009 at the very start of the area where the buses stop in the Lower Old Town, so that it is the first thing that you see when you come up to the Old Town by road from Patitiri.  From the book by Kostas Mavrikis "These Scattered isles: Alonnisos & the Lesser Northern Sporades" we learn that Vasilis PapaVasilis (1875 - 1941) was a teacher, priest, musician and artist that made the school at the very bottom of the Upper Old Town, prior to the earthquake in 1965, one of the best school's in the county of Magnesia.  The icon screen in the church of Agia Paraskevi is adorned with his paintings and his bones were transferred to the church and you can see his final resting place at the rear of the church.
