Walk Around the Seven Churches in the Old Village

This walk takes between 1½ - 2 hours depending on the prevailing weather conditions, how fast you walk and how many tavernas you stop at for a drink.  General comments are as follows:

  1.   Some of the churches will be locked
  2.   Wear appropriate clothes so you can go into those churches that are open
  3.   Take water for the first part of the walk

View pictures of the walk around the seven churches at the bottom of the page.

Walk from the bus stop passed Taverna Nikos towards Plateia Christos and after a short distance you will find steps on your left opposite a taverna.  Walk down these steps to the bottom where the old Municipal Well will be opposite and the rear of the Church of Agia Evangelistria is to your right.  The entrance of the church is in a small courtyard around to the right.

When you leave the courtyard walk straight ahead along the bottom track of the Old Town.  There are lovely views to the left as you walk along.  Avoid turning down any paths or up any steps as you walk along, just follow the path.  Eventually the path ends at a set of steps that go up or down.  Walk up these steps and towards the top you will find the Church of Agios Demetrios.  Continue passed the church and you end up in the main thoroughfare of the Upper Old Town next to the Taverna Paraport.

Walk along the main thoroughfare of the Upper Old Town towards the war memorial and just before Taverna I Kira Nina are steps going down to the right.  As you walk down the steps you will see the Church of Agios Nikolaos right in front of you.  The church is sometimes open during the day and if dressed appropriately you should go in and have a look at the beautiful decoration inside the church.

When you leave Agios Nikolaos walk back up the steps to the main thoroughfare and turn right towards the war memorial.  Just after Taverna Kastro on the left there is a set of steps that leads up to their balcony area.  If you walk up these steps and continue round, you will arrive at the top of the Old Town and on your left you will see the Church of Agios Georgios opposite two houses that have been recently refurbished.  As the church is no longer used their is no cross on the church.

Walk back down the steps passed Taverna Kastro and head down the steps to the Plateia Iroon where you will see the war memorial on the wall.  Walk down the steps towards the Lower Old Town and at the bottom of the stairs you will arrive at the Church of Christ.  The church is generally open during the day so if dressed appropriately you should go in and have a look at the icons of Christ.  To get to the next church just walk straight across Platiea Christos and the Church of Agios Athanassios is in front of you.  This church is often open.

To get to the last church walk to the left side of the Church of Agios Athanassios and follow the path around the back to emerge passed at the main road and looking to the left you will see the cemetary on the opposite side of the road.  Walk along the road passed the cemetary and just passed the entrance gates to the cemetary you will find the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary which is only normally open for funeral services .  Walk back along the main road to the bus stop and enjoy the beautiful view before stopping under the pine trees for a well deserved drink.
