XMAS POEMS FOR GERRY

BY DAVE, THE POET ILLAUREATE

Gerry's First Xmas Away

This year Gerry's not with me
But she's sitting around a tree
With Alice, Fred, Laurie and Nik
And the rest of the family

She's drinking ouzo, smoking rollies
And having lots of fun
And thrashing Nik at Gin Rummy
Where he cheated but never won

Alice is doing the cooking for four
With portions for twenty three
And the syrup sponge pudding
Is always "wait and see"

Xmas' will never be the same
And that will always be
But 40 days from her passing
She sent Gerroula for company

Gerry's spirit is free now
As she knows that I'm OK
Because of becoming Santa Claus
At the Children's Fun Day

Gerry and Agios Vasilis
Have clearly made a deal
So at Netty and Demi's house this year
I'll enjoy my Christmas meal

Gerroula's First Christmas With Love

It's the morning of Christmas and all through the house
Gerroula is squeaking an old rubber mouse

The wreath which had merrily hung on the door
is now scattered in pieces all over the floor

The stockings that are hanging in neat little rows
now boast a large hole in each one of the toes

The tree was decorated while listening to hymns
and now, although splendid, it's missing some limbs

I catch her and cuddle her "Be good" if you can
she licks me, and then runs off to shred a snowman

And now as I watch her, the thought comes to me
that there is a spirit that Christmas should be

Should puppies like Gerroula yet show us the way
and teach us the joy that should come with this day

Could they bring us the message that's written above
and tell us that, most of all, Christmas is love
